My only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear
How much I love you
So please don't take my sunshine away
****
The other night, dear
While I was sleeping
I dreamt I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung
My head
And cried

A beautiful and sad song at the same time.
This song masquerades as a compliment... "You are my sunshine..." And I sometimes catch myself singing it... I learned it as a kid from my parents. But as the song goes on... you discover it's really a lament. (And you've been had!) The key? Only sing the first verse! ;-) (Self-delusion IS an option!)
Very true, guys!
I've always wanted to sing it as "I never told you how much I love you..." instead of "you'll never know..." Some kind of Freudian thing working there?
It's crazy the songs that establish themselves in the world of children.
